An idea is only the beginning.Every book starts somewhere. It may be a character, a photograph, a memory, a question, a place, a single sentence—or simply an idea that won’t go away.But having the idea and creating the book are two very different things.The creative process is rarely a straight line. Stories take unexpected turns. Characters develop. Something that seemed important in the beginning disappears, while a small detail can become central to the story.Sometimes an early idea evolves into something completely different as you explore it. That doesn't mean the original idea failed. It may simply mean you've discovered where the idea was capable of going.Then comes the rewriting.Words are questioned. Scenes are strengthened or removed. Pacing changes. You begin looking at the work not only as the person who created it, but as the person who will eventually read it.Eventually, the writing, editing, design, title, cover, and presentation begin working together.Coming up with the idea may be the beginning. Discovering what that idea can become is the creative process.
